What is ABA and how can it help my child?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a widely recognized and evidence-based approach used to help children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) develop various skills and reduce maladaptive behaviors. Here's how ABA helps children with autism:

  • Targeted Interventions: ABA uses structured interventions to teach a wide range of skills such as communication, social, self-help, and adaptive skills. These interventions are broken down into smaller, manageable steps that are taught systematically.

  • Individualized Treatment: ABA is tailored to each child's needs. Board Certified Behavior Analysts assess the child's strengths and deficits and develop personalized treatment plans to address specific goals.

  • Behavior Modification: ABA focuses on changing behaviors by identifying the functions behind them. It seeks to understand why a behavior occurs and then uses positive reinforcement and other behavior modification techniques to encourage desired behaviors and reduce maladaptive behaviors.

  • Teaching Functional Skills: ABA aims to teach functional skills that help individuals with autism live more independently. This includes skills related to communication, social interaction, daily living, academics, and vocational skills.

  • Data-Driven Approach: ABA uses data collection and analysis to track progress systematically. Behavior analysts continuously monitor progress and adjust interventions as needed to ensure effectiveness.

  • Generalization of Skills: ABA encourages the generalization of learned skills across different settings and situations. This helps children apply the skills they've learned in therapy to real-life situations.

  • Early Intervention: ABA is effective when started early. Early intervention can lead to significant improvements in the long-term outcomes for children with autism. Because of this, we developed a unique daytime program designed for children ages 2-6 that focuses on helping the youngest of learners achieve fundamental milestones and transition to the least restrictive environment in school. One Step At A Time

The ITS ABA program is designed for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This program helps children to expand their activities of daily living skills while incorporating fine and gross motor as well as language development. Behavior Analysts perform a comprehensive evaluation to learn what each child's deficits are and what triggers possible negative (maladaptive) behaviors. They work with the family and other therapists the child interacts with to develop a positive plan of action with goals so that an individualized program emerges.
